Songstress Yudi Yap is back with her KopiSusu series, introducing her new original " Jalan-Jalan", a concoction of Yudi's poetic lyrics and Tay Cher Siang's musical genius. WVC Trio provided the musical backbone, and we had Fresco, an international award winning harmonica ensemble to be featured in the song. Double MS technique was used to capture the harmonica, having them surrounding the microphone sets, the recorded result were rich and real.

HeyMun and Chern Hui @StarMount Studio
The talented singer songwriter is based in Sydney Australia, coming back to KL for a short trip. So it was supposed to be a drop by and say hi trip, but we were all excited to try out some microphones-Telefunken AR-51, JZ V67 and JZ J1 (thanks to Soundbuz for their high standards and relentless support), and a new DAW-Pyramix.
We have heard how Pyramix are known for their superior sonic quality, just that its not as widely used by the commercial studios. Thanks to Stagetec Asia and Merging Technologies, we got the Horus with premium ADDA to try out along with Pyramix Masscore system.
This is an impromptu session and the duo liked the idea. Without much delay, HeyMun had her Taylor acoustic guitar tuned while Chern Hwei was already on the resin for his violin.
We had the duo in the same room, 6 ft away from each other. We used the Telefunken AR51 on the vocals, and V67 for acoustic guitar. The violin was done with our favorite sE RT1 Tube Ribbon (great cinematic strings tone with the mic)
So, that was the first studio session for "Hail", a new original from Heymun about friendship. The performance was magical and we're very happy to be able to capture the moment. Pyramix is amazing, and its true that the sonic quality is of very high fidelity and natural. And we're liking it every second we're on it.(not a good sign)
The whole session was done in a default setting:192khz set at 32 bit. And only going through the Horus micpre and AD. We were amazed by how balanced and natural the mic pres could produce, and the headroom was huge.
Everyone was excited and with much delight to hear what was being recorded. We were using the Lavry Blue all this while and the Horus got the upper hand with a huge margin in terms of clarity, fullness and headroom.
Again, it opens up the discussion about recording/ operating beyond 96kHz. To us, listening is believing and we were impressed by this new system from Merging Technologies. Drop by the studio for your own AB comparison. We would like to have more ears to tell us that we're not "hearing things" in the studio or its the "new gear hype" that we are going through right now.

Tribute To Yao Min Rehearsal @ StarMount Studio
WVC Trio+ 1 was rehearsing for "Tribute to Yao Min", organized by Han Production and lead by one of Malaysia's top vocal talent/ artise Yang Wei Han. The idea was to rehearse the songs, do the rundown from top til end and most importantly get them recorded. This was good for the other artistes/ singers that couldn't make it for the rehearsal and be able to know whats going on and rehearse by themselves.
Although it was just a rehearsal session, we prep it up like a recording session that the client could use the material for further release.
The band was great to work with and we hook the signals through the Audient Zen, which so far its the best option to get a balance overall band sound when tracking together. After so many matching and pairing, we found that using the same line/ character of pres and A/D converters contributes to the "one-ness" or the coherence in between instruments.

Pay Fong Centennial Celebration Album @StarMount Studio
We were honored to be part of the Pey Fong High School (Melaka) for their Centennial Celebration. We tracked live for most of the music, led by aspiring music director Cher Siang and his amazing bandmates AJ Pop Shuvit, KJ Wong Julian Chan and Joel Woo, where the band nailed the instrumental parts within a day.
We used mono setup for the drums, utilizing only one pencil condenser as the overheads, and mic up the snare and bass drums. Piano were comfortably covered by dense fabrics and comforters, shielding the sE4400 pair from excessive leakage of sound. Bass was direct in to the Chandler TGII and Portico 5043 compression.

The Bassment Syndicate @ StarMount Studio
The Bassment Syndicate was here for their upcoming album release. Great tunes and extremely fun and inspiring live sessions. Experimenting on drums set up, getting the right synths patches and definitely setting the mics right and matching them to the right pres and outboards.

MIA Students in StarMount Studio
Led by Ken Hor, students from MIA (Malaysian Institute of Arts) had their arrangements played and recorded in StarMount Studio. Nothing is better than having your written works being materialize by seasoned musicians, playing it live and recorded in the studio. Students were excited and thrilled at the same time.
Its a great opportunity to be involved in a live recording situation, hear the texture of a recorded grand piano together with amped guitars and live drums.
Entire session was done with 6 mics, JZ V47 and Sennheiser e902 on the drums (OH n Kick), AKG D112 on Ampeg, Sennheiser MD 421 on Fender and sE 4400a pair. All signals were transported by Analysis Plus Yellow Ovals cables. Kept it simple and we love it! Especially the drums. Fun Times :)

Off The Cuff @StarMount Studio
Off The Cuff, a young and promising band came all the way from Singapore for their debut album. Featuring Meryl Joan Lee on vocals, Sooty Heng on the piano, Seow Yi Zhe double bass and Benjamin Low on drums.
We were excited to record the band as they also brought in the whole arsenal of Analysis Plus cables for the recording. Most were hooked up with the Yellow Ovals except Vocals and Double Bass on the Pro Ovals.
As usual, sE4400 stereo pair is our favorite for piano, JZ V12 for vocals, Ribbon tube on the double bass (sounded so rich and warm), as for drums, overheads sE 3, snare SM57 and bass drum e902.
We were lucky to have Artisan series of Dixon for the recordings as well. The set is coated with Dixon's patented liquid gold finish and we like what we see. As for sound we love what we're hearing from the drum kit. Although the 22"x 18" is a bit too large for us, but we're loving the warm lows from the kick. The flexible tuning range is definitely helpful in getting the right tone for the songs.
We had all Analysis Plus cables for the entire recordings, including the interconnects to the monitor speakers. Blue Ovals really helps the Quested V2108 to reveal more especially on the high frequencies, wider stereo field and we also noticed faster transients as well.
Neve Portico on vocals, and bass, Chandler TG2 for pianos and the rest through Zen console. All in all, the audio quality was surprising and it's definitely another pleasant and enjoyable session to all. We'll keep you posted on their album release, definitely not to be missed.
